Dr. Moravec's Retirement Announcement

Dear Patients and Friends:

After 35 years in the private practice of medicine, I am writing to inform you that I will be retiring December 30, 2014. Until that date, I will be available to serve your medical needs. It has been my pleasure providing for your health care over the years.

You will want to make arrangements to select a new ENT/Facial Plastic physician to make sure you receive uninterrupted medical care. I suggest that you contact your primary care doctor and/or your insurance to obtain names of ENT physicians that are in your plan. Another option is to call the University of Cincinnati ENT Department at (513) 475-8400. They have a large number of physicians that can treat all aspects of ENT and Facial Plastics.

Your medical records are confidential. If you would want a copy forwarded to you or to your new physician, you will need to complete an authorization to release these records. Unfortunately, your medical records cannot be released without a written authorization signed by you. For your convenience, an authorization form is available by clicking here.  This form will need to be completed and returned to the office once you have selected a new physician. There will be a reasonable copying/mailing fee based on Ohio law to cover the cost of duplication and postage. Please allow at least 14 days to process your request. May: Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and a great time to remind ourselves about how important it is to protect our skin from the sun.  Unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.  You need protection even if it's cool and cloudy.  Clouds do not block UV rays; they filter them and only slightly at that.
Everyone should use a daily sunscreen, and Dr. Moravec recommends a physical filter sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 and protection from both UVA and UVB sun rays.  Look for ingredients Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.  They protect by staying on top of the skin and act as a barrier to the sun's damaging rays.  These two products are great for those people who do not like to "feel" the product on their skin or are prone to breakouts.
If you have any suspicious-looking spots, you should check with your primary care doctor or
Dr. Moravec.

Coffee May Help Reduce Risk for Skin Cancer

A report in the January, 2012 issue of DaySpa reflects results of studies at the Mayo Clinic and Harvard and Vanderbilt Universities.  These studies show that people who drank 3 cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop basal cell carcinoma.  (Basal cell carcinoma is the most common and least invasive form of skin cancer.)  Women who participated in the study showed a 20 percent risk reduction while men in the study had a 9 percent risk reduction.  The analysis was based on a population of 113,000 between 1984 and 2008.  Researchers compared the amount of coffee consumed with the rate of basal cell carcinoma.  Coffee is reported to be high in free radical-fighting antioxidants.  According to the report, this benefit just might help minimize the development of basal cell skin cancer!

Back to Basics: Moisturizers

The importance of moisture to the skin is often under-estimated in the skin health industry. While hydrators may not offer a miracle sure, achieving and maintaining skin moisture levels is imperative to the treatment of all skin conditions.

Everyone needs at least one hydrating product, and it is wise to have several options available. The search for appropriate hydrators for your skin type can be challenging since there are so many products on the market. Here are some of our moisturizers:

Restorative Treatment Cream — ideal for dry, delicate, mature skin; not for oily skin
Clearskin — great for oily, acne-prone skin
Sheer Hydration — light, SPF 15; for all skin types
Men’s Total Defense — for all skin types, calming hydrator with SPF 25
Emollience — good overnight hydrator for dry, mature skin
Hydrating B5 Gel — popular, non-greasy hydrator for all skin types; contains Vitamin B5
Hydrator Plus — great for dry skin; with SPF 30
Protecting Hydrator — non-oily; light moisture with a matte finish; with SPF 30

While some evaporation through the epidermis (permeable outer barrier of the skin) is necessary, overexposure to UV rays, extreme temperatures and aggressive product use can lead to barrier dysfunction. Symptoms are dry, flaky skin with a dull appearance. The use of moisturizers will help hydrate the skin and help the epidermis maintain a natural and balanced moisture level.
